Great, but not sure it is worth the money

Posted by Stephen Neal on 19th Jun 2024

Purchased an SP7 (i5, 8ram, 128ssd) spring 2019 and liked it so much I decided to give it to my brother from his b-day and buy a better spec model (i7, 16 ram, 256 ssd). Here are my thoughts after nearly two months. PROS: -Weight. Very light portable device. Fits nicely in my computer bag with plenty of room for accessories. -Build quality. Nothing about this device feels cheap or poorly made. Also, there are no issues with fingerprints (unless you are someone who doesn't wash their hands) and the matte black finish not chipped at all. -Processor. CPU is great. Geekbench 5 scores: 1300+ single-core test and 4800+ multi-core test (2020 iPad Pro 12.9 Geekbench 5 scores are 1126 single-core and 4720 multi-core). -Battery life. Don't believe YouTubers or so-called experts. Battery life is outstanding. In tablet mode, I get over 8 hours of continuous YouTube viewing (50% brightness, power mode on balance - best battery life, Bluetooth and Wifi both on. And about 7.5 hours in computer mode. So my SP7 last all day when I do basic office work. -Fan. Fan no is a none issue. Very quiet and rarely comes on. -Surface connect charger. Very strong, but detaches easily if pulled off. -Kickstand. Very sturdy but also flexible. -Brightness. Screen is very bright at close to 400 nits (300 is recommended minimum). -USB-C port. I use this port for connecting to a 24-inch monitor when I need more screen space or a dual-screen set-up. -Overheating. I opened 20 YouTube videos at once and the device did not overheat. The temperature stabilized well below 60 degrees Celsius. Also, none of the apps had to be restarted. CONS: -Notetaking. Too big for easy notetaking. My Surface Go 2 was much more comfortable. -Accessories. Does not come with a pen or keyboard. Both of which can be expensive if you don't buy open-box from Best Buy or used from Amazon. -Display. For my needs, the display is too small to do work on for a long period of time. I see this device as a light-weight laptop replacement when I start traveling again. -Price. At a full-retail price of $1,500 (10th gen i7, 16 ram, 256 ssd), my SP7 cost almost as much as the full retail price of my 2020 15" HP Spectre x360 (10th gen i7, 16 ram, 512 ssd). Conclusion. I love my upgraded i7/16 ram/256 ssd SP7, but I can not recommend it over an i5/8ram/128 ssd unless you really need the extra RAM and processing power (you can buy a $30-$50 microSD card to make up for loss in storage) in a very portable device. I didn't have such a need, but it was discounted 35% (which more than covered the cost of MS Office (1-device lifetime), MS 2-year warranty, open-box surface pen and keyboard, and microSD card) and I wanted to treat myself to a b-day present! There is plenty of information on the internet outlining strategies for enhancing the Surface Pro 7’s battery life. From my brief experience, an open internet browser is the biggest drain on the battery (Google's Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers all drain the battery faster than the Microsoft Edge browser). Overheating. With no apps open and all apps closed in the background, my Surface Pro 7’s average cpu temperature is approximately 32 degrees . My ASUS laptop's average cpu temperature (i7 8th generation cpu, 16 ram, dual fans) is approximately 30 degrees Celsius. After noting these baseline cpu temperatures, I opened 10 Youtube videos, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and one of my statistical software programs to see how much both cpu temperatures would increase. Very basic rules of thumb are that a temperature near or above 70 degrees Celsius is seen as running hot, and a temperature close to or above 100 degrees Celsius is considered overheating. With all the above apps running simultaneously (and no apps running in the background) my Surface Pro 7’s average cpu temperature was roughly 53 degrees Celsius. The average cpu temperature of my laptop was about 50 degrees Celsius. Does the Surface Pro 7 get warm when it is pushed? Mine did. Does it overheat or get too hot to touch? Mine didn’t. In short, if you want a great portable computer the Surface Pro 7 is an ideal device.

A powerful 2 in 1 in such a small form factor!

Posted by William Haynes on 17th Jun 2024

What a system. I returned a lower spec model (i5/8gb/128ssd) for this since I wanted to future-proof it a bit more and let me tell you it was worth it. Don't get me wrong, the i5 model is very sweet and had no issues with anything I threw at it but the i7 is a bit more powerful and it gives a nice 30-50% or even more bonus to 3d heavy applications or games. Both the i5 and i7 use the Iris Plus which is an intel feature on these CPU's but the i7 has 64 execution units while the i5 only has 48 and that right there is the major difference. You can run most games at 1080p on medium settings with a very good framerate. Now you won't be playing Gears 5 or anything crazy like that but it has no issues with MMO's like WoW, or FFXIV, Albion Online, Warcraft 3 remastered, Starcraft 2 or anything like that. Having the extra ram is also very nice for browsing if you use a ton of tabs and multitask a lot and the SSD is blazing fast. The one thing I was worried about was the fan since the i3 and i5 are fanless and silent. The moment I started doing windows updates on the i7 I noticed the fan kicked in and was pretty noticable but that seems to have gone away and only appears when installing apps or heavy gaming, but the best part is I noticed the system runs a lot cooler than the i5 so you will have almost no throttling like the i5 and you can keep a constant CPU speed for much much longer. All around I'm super impressed with this computer. It's such a powerhouse in a very small form factor and it's one of the best made/looking pieces of tech out there. I would not hesitate buying this again and will stick with the Surface lineup going forward. The only thing it needs is a nice re-design to something like the X but without sacrificing the CPU (ARM yuck). 10/10.

    2nd Surface Pro: From 4 to 7

Posted by Cynthia Jones on 8th Jun 2024

This is my 2nd Surface, I started with a Survey 4 having used both PC/laptops and the Mac Tablet, I was looking for something that was more of a hybrid - and thus my love for the Surface. Its not the best laptop, nor, table, in the world, yet, to me, it is the best of both worlds in terms of an integrated, multi-use product. I'm a professor, I use it for my work, teaching, research, and personal - a true workhorse. When I'm working at home, or in the office, I connect it to an external monitor and decking station and it meets my needs. Very pleased with my new Surface Pro 7 and was happy to be able use the keyboard and pen from my prior Surface. Pricy, yet worth it!

Good product, more PC than tablet

Posted by Claire Strickland on 7th Jun 2024

After exclusively having iPads for tablet needs for 8 years, I decided to try the Surface Pro. My problem was that I needed a laptop, but wanted a touchscreen. I'm not a big fan of 2-in-1 laptops, so I found a good deal on the surface and went for it. So far, so good. The newest generation includes a decent hibernation feature, so it turns on quickly. It's powerful enough for any productivity apps I need, and because it's full fledged Windows, I can put an program I need on it. I even tried running Sea of Thieves just see what it looked like. Not good, but it does run! I removed a star for a several reasons. - While the kickstand is great, it prevents it from resting on your lap comfortably. Really only a problem for me if I do work on it. - It's heavy, for a tablet. Not the most comfortable to hold and use to surf the web or read. - After being asleep, it takes a while for it to reconnect to your network. Hopefully something that can be resolved with a Windows update. The positives outweigh the negatives, though. Especially with the accessories. While I don't like that they're sold separately, well, pretty much every "premium" model from any company is similar. Apple finally copied the keyboard, which is my favorite part of the setup. Since I got a returned model, I could afford to invest in all the accessories. The keyboard and pen are the best, the mouse is OK. To sum up, if you need (or just want, and can afford it) a tablet that can double as a very decent PC, the Surface Pro is a great way to go. But, if you just need something for entertainment purposes, I'd say iPad and Android tablets are still king.

    Lightning fast laptop

Only got this because it was on sale, but it's since become my primary work computer. Lightning fast, as expected. The Microsoft Surface line never disappoints in performance and portability.

    Love my surface pro

Posted by Maurice Miller on 1st Jun 2024

I am super pleased with my surface pro 7. It is so fast and easy to operate. I purchased the keyboard also because I just would rather have a keyboard to type. I use it for our small business and I also do prn work at home and use it for that too.

    Review of Surface Pro 7

Posted by Karina Crane on 28th May 2024

Highly portable, but a little too heavy to replace an iPad. Great display for reading PDF’s and online text. Touch screen is super useful. Definitely recommend the i7 / 16GB RAM configuration— originally had an i5 and switched it out for the i7 —MUCH faster and more useable with the i7. After one year of use, the Surface Pro 7 completely died - would NOT even turn on - complete brick. Two things saved me - 1) ALL personal files were on the SD card - not the SSD, and 2) we got the Geek Squad Protection plan - saved us the price of a new Surface; I consider this protection plan a must for the Surface Pro (which seems to be less robust than most laptops). Overall, the Surface Pro still fills a niche that doesn’t have an exact equal in the market. If you like the feel of the Pro, it’s the best out there.
