    Some Good Points-Some Bad Points

Posted by Richard Kim on 6th Apr 2024

I replaced our old GE Microwave that gave up the ghost after many, many years of daily use. I tried very hard to get as close to the same microwave as I could. I liked the old microwave’s solid material construction & the way it heated food all the way through without constantly monitoring the process. It cooked baked potatoes perfectly along with melting quesadillas cheese without overcooking or drying out. So I settled on this GE model. It was almost the same size though the old microwave had curves at the front top sides where the new one is strictly boxy. I figured the inner workings would be the same if I got the same wattage. The first thing I noticed is the tinny sound when the door closes. The old microwave had a solid close snap that sounded firm. This new model makes a tinny snap that makes me think it could do with a better grade of mechanism. The pros are the cooking panel is easy to use & is much like the one before with individual settings for popcorn, potatoes etc. as well as the numerical settings. But the buttons are more clicky than a smooth press like ye olde model. The turntable gizmo is more substantial than the past model. This one has multi prongs that wont slip or slide while turning the heavy glass plate during the cooking process. Also it’s relatively quiet more so than the older model. The cons are: I noticed a small dent towards the back, almost unnoticeable except it’s towards the bottom so when you move it for cleaning & line it back up it catches the eye. Somewhere during the shipping process, even though the box was well padded it got tapped just right to crease the metal which means it’s not as durable a metal as the older model, which explains the tinny noise when I move it around. And I mentioned the clunky sound when opening & closing the door. Cosmetically it has clean lines but I noticed right off the vents on the side are towards the front, rather than the back, which blows air to your face when checking on cooking food. It’s a little uncomfortable, which is why I noticed the vents in the first place. Also it only has two rubber pads on the bottom at the front & none on the back so when moving to clean it leaves marks on tile & the microwave rocks off balance so I had to put a furniture mover square under to balance. You might wonder why I didn’t return the microwave but honestly I really hate to return things & I needed a new one ASAP so I stuck it out. I don’t think it will last nearly as long as the twelve years the old one made it. I give it maybe 2 years just on a hunch on the mechanics of the matter. I waited a good 6 months before reviewing this GE microwave as I wanted to check cooking various foods. Quesadillas are tricky. It likes to half melt the cheese but cook the shell nicely. To totally melt the cheese, the shell gets tough so you have to babysit the quesadilla while it’s cooking to get it just right. Frozen dinners have to be carefully monitored & stirred even when the directions don’t say it or the top layer is tough, especially anything with a patty or noodles in it. And I have yet to get a pot pie to cook without either drying the heck out of it or creating a gummy crust. So do I wish I had bought a different model? Yep. But would it have been a better model? I’m not sure. So many appliances seem to be just passable these days, kind of like disposable products, not meant to last past the warranty. So I’ll be kind & say this GE microwave is passable. Neither perfect nor horrible. Meanwhile I’ll microwave up some popcorn, it does that quite well & there’s a button for that.

GE microwave is easy to operate.

I really like this GE microwave. I had a microwave that had a black window. This microwave has a white one so you can see the food while it's cooking. It is also easy to operate.
