Some minor drawbacks, but overall a good printer!

Posted by Erica Caldwell on 4th Apr 2024

The Brother HL-L2405W is a fairly robust laser printer that brings several advantages to the table. Laser printers offer faster print speeds and higher page yields, while avoiding the issue of ink drying out when printing infrequently - as lower print volume users might experience. I was pleased to see that, like my previous Brother laser printer, the prints come out with crisp and sharp lettering. Brother carries with it some strong brand recognition and reputation; I've owned a Brother and had friends who used Brothers for their home business printing needs, and I've only ever heard glowing praise. Now having used two Brother printers, I can say that praise is well-warranted. In my experience with HP inkjets and a few Canon inkjets, Brother tends to be more reliable overall with fewer print issues. Perhaps that's part and parcel for having a more limited print offering, but it speaks to Brother's quality in a field where printers tend to be built as loss leaders for ink sales. Being monochrome is a bit of a disadvantage as someone who needs to print color and photos regularly, but for people printing documents and labels regularly this is a great option. I found printing from multiple devices to be fairly painless as well, adding a huge point for convenience. The noise level is also surprisingly low, at least compared to my similarly sized HP OfficeJet. Although it's not a small printer, I could see it living comfortably on a bookshelf in a room with plenty of foot traffic without issue as well; it isn't intrusively loud and it prints quickly, so whatever noise it does produce tends to be short-lived. There are some aspects that are less exciting, however. One is the ink subscription Brother is pushing with this device. "Refresh" is now about three years old, but my previous Brother had lasted years and predated their Refresh program so I had no experience with it. It seems comparable to HP's own Instant Ink, and while some users may find it convenient, I question its usefulness when toner cartridges usually don't need to be replaced nearly as often (that's one of the perks!) and when HP has demonstrated in the past that it can remotely disable printers with cancelled subscriptions even if there is ink left in the cartridge. While I haven't seen reviews of that (yet?) with Brother's Refresh, it is somewhat concerning. Additionally, there is a monthly page limit with the Refresh plans that seems counterintuitive when laser printers are lauded for their high page yields. I was admittedly disappointed to see that. There were some other little nitpicks, like the setup process being somewhat challenging due to the printer's incredibly minimal controls and the lack of backlighting for the LED screen, but overall I found this printer to be a brilliant offering for people in the market for a b/w laser printer. As far as I can tell, the Refresh subscription is optional which makes it harder to judge it too harshly. It's also worth noting that a USB cable wasn't included for a direct wired connection and that the packaging was excessive in my opinion - I'd like to have seen Brother embrace more eco-friendly packaging solutions and not opt users out of a wired experience if they so desire. Even with this printer I experienced some hiccups with connectivity and if I needed to print something off right that second, I'd like the option at least. Automatic duplex printing would've been great in a printer that is so well-suited for document printing and other double-sided jobs, but one can still use manual duplex printing. Ultimately, this is a neat printer packed with the perks of the Brother label and laser print tech. I found it met most of my monochrome printing needs and would happily recommend it. There are some aspects where it falls just short of my perfect printer, but they may be reasonable compromises for users who just don't need or want them. Perhaps others find the Refresh subscription less of an issue, too, in which case the free months offered end up a boon to users. Some of these drawbacks make it harder to recommend for heavy users, but I find it difficult to take a full star off for them when the printer itself is just so decent. In the end, it prints well and crisply and I can't take issue with how it does its job 99% of the time - so a (rounded up) 5/5 feels fair.

A really nice wireless b&w laser printer

Posted by Timothy Mccann on 1st Apr 2024

With its compact size, fast and quiet printing, and simple operation, this is a great printer. The Brother HL-L2405W printer is easy to use right out of the box. Remove the packing tape from the unit, insert the toner cartridge, plug the printer in, connect it to your network, and you're ready to go. Connection to WiFi is simple. Using the Brother app on your phone, you find the correct printer model, select your network, and enter the WiFi passcode. The Brother is completely plug-and-play, and my Windows, iOS, and MacBook air all found it and connected immediately. Print quality from the brother is excellent, with crisp images delivered quickly. Operation is quiet and, at least so far, quite reliable. I’ve had no paper jams or other issues. The contents of the box tout the Brother Creative Center, a website where you can find fun, creative projects, from work templates to origami projects. What’s a bit odd is that these templates and projects are largely designed for color printing (as you would expect), while this is a black and white printer. No matter, I’m happy to know that the Create Center exists, as it will still work with my inkjet. Many Brother printers now come with smart cartridges and subscription plans. The cartridges monitor your ink levels and automatically ship a new one to you before you run out. This printer is not one of them. While some may see this as a disadvantage, I actually prefer not having my devices monitoring my behavior – I see it as a plus. Depending on your toner needs and preferences, you may want a unit that does offer this. Overall, this is a relatively basic but highly functional and easy to use printer. I would definitely recommend it.
