    Amazing DVR

We needed a new 4K dvr to go with our 4K tv. It’s amazing.

Smooth operation out of the box.

This player is by far one of the best out there in my experience. It strikes a nice balance between price and performance. I have an LG OLED alongside a projector and they both work well after you tweak some menu settings. What is most convenient is not having to manually set Dolby Vision with each title you watch like some other players. This was important to me with the content I watch. I have also tested many standard Blu-Ray titles, 3D Blu-ray, and some DVDs without issue. I have not had any issues with this player in my home theater. The only thing I can add is that it would be nice if the remote featured Bluetooth. That would be a big bonus but it isn't a massive downside.

    Full Five Stars

Posted by Michael Shields on 31st May 2024

Picture quality is excellent as I suspected it would be. Very, very nice. The experience is more like looking out a window rather than watching a video display. The 4K movies I watched and the upscaling job the player did on regular Blu-ray discs was top notch in my opinion. Regular DVDs I watched were not very satisfying however and I have to believe this was due to the source material rather than any deficiency of the UBK90. The remote control has a number of buttons made of translucent rubber, but are not backlit. In this day and age I find it puzzling that manufacturers of televisions and source hardware do not provide remote controls with back lighting. A lot of my TV watching is in a room with no lights or low ambient light and quite often I want to pause or “rewind” programming or perform some other function and I often struggle to find the correct button on the remote. This LG remote does provide some tactile clues to help you navigate in the dark, but I would still prefer full backlighting. The remote takes only one AAA battery - seeing this in a remote is a first for me, and the battery is provided. An HDMI cable is not provided with the player. The power cord is attached to the chassis and is not removable - this might be inconvenient for some installs when swapping out equipment with concealed wiring. The front panel controls on the unit are basic: power, drawer open, play/pause, and stop. The buttons are raised symbols that are impossible to tell apart by feel and none of them are illuminated. There is a faint green light on the front panel to indicate the power is on. I miss the old days when there was a digital counter on the front panel, but on this LG there is no display of any type. There is a front panel USB port to allow you to connect other devices with content on them. The unit makes very little noise when running. The top of the case is flat which makes it possible to stack hardware - some makers have had case tops that were not flat and I would find that annoying if I wanted to sit something on top of the player. Provided apps are only Netflix and YouTube. This is probably of no real concern since most 4K televisions are probably smart TVs with a multitude of built-in apps. Menus are easy to navigate, unit responds to remote commands crisply, setup is easy, wi-fi connection and firmware updating is simple. This player supports a wide variety of optical disc formats and file formats…I can’t believe there are any more out there that are not on the list of supported types, nor did I even know this many existed. The LG UBK90 is a moderately priced Ultra-HD Blu-ray player that should satisfy most anyone looking to update their hardware to 4K capability. The only thing that disappointed me was the lack of remote illumination, but that is probably the case with 90+ percent of current remote controls, so I don’t feel right dinging this player a full star for that.

LG gives a satisfying multimedia experience

Posted by Jared Moore on 26th May 2024

I am a casual watcher of movies and TV. The LG 4K Blu-ray Player suited my needs and has more than enough features should I be curious to explore them. I have this player connected to my LG 32” UHD HDR Monitor with FreeSync in white and use my Sennheiser HD 560S Wired Open Aire Over-the-Ear Headphones for an isolated audio and movie-watching experience. The playback is great, the startup and shutdown times are convenient, and the imagery and sounds are equally stable and loud. The remote is handy and the homing bars or small bumps on certain buttons help the user remember and find the right buttons to press when the lights are off. You do have to point the remote directly in line with the light sensor. At an angle, it may not respond to the first press. If you need a Blu-ray player that can stream YouTube, play music CDs, display images and videos via USB, and play DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K discs, this one from LG takes the cake.

    4K Player w/ Impressive Upscaling. That's It.

Posted by Kayla Meyer on 23rd May 2024

I was a little concerned when I bought this unit but I picked it up as it was marked down and it came with a free Harmony 635 which I wanted for the theater area so I didn't have to rely on Google Home or my phone for everything. I'm very pleased with the quality of 4K video and HDR. Having Dolby Vision was a plus although I can't testify to that. Purchased the 900e earlier this year so I can confirm the HDR10 is very good. (4/5) Most surprising to me about the player was Blu-Ray 1080P playback and the upscaling. I'd heard all the ravings about the best Samsung, Sony, and Oppo players but the UBK90 did wonders to my Rush Hour trilogy. Some of the dark scenes in the first movie had me pausing to make sure I was seeing things straight. Crisp! Absolutely crisp! Don't get me wrong, if you stare hard enough and get close enough, you'll see some breakdown, fuzz, snow...whatever you want to call it. But from 8-12 feet away, I was beaming. (4/5) During playback, I found the unit is pretty quiet. I don't hear it unless i'm popping the tray open or nobody is in the room with me while there's no sound. Don't worry about this adding to your movie soundtrack. (4/5) The build quality is meh. It's not horrible but it's not great. The top is textured in some corrugated plastic it feels. The remote I used initially and it was satisfactory. Nothing special about it though. No crazy programmed functions. I quickly replaced it with the Harmony 635. That said, I can't add this particular player to other Harmony hubs in the house. I guess Harmony haven't included it in their repository yet . (3/5) The worse part about the player was the UI. Put plainly, it sucks. It is just poor. The bright white and pink greeting screen is absolutely atrocious. Not sure who picked this but I hope their name isn't Baby because they need to go directly to the corner. The white and silver menu screens work but I really don't understand why they went with white. I almost went 0/5 on this one but ...naw. They deserve (0/5) for this. Last special features. You get a Ethernet port and wireless connectivity. No 3D as far as I know. If you're looking for great app support, this box is not for you. Netflix and YouTube are all you get. There is a USB port which you can use to play some digital movies, view photos, or jam to some tunes but who seriously carries about USB thumb drives for media playback these days? I was definitely disappointed to see no easy way to play media off Network drives. It may be option but I sure didn't see it. (2/5) My comparisons are up against an Xbox One S in which it averaged a 3/5. You'll probably find this on par with a 3/5. If you just want a 4K Blu Ray player with very good upscaling, this device is for you at the right price. Price is key here. Anything above $200 and you should look elsewhere.

    Dolby Vision Performs Well

Posted by Jennifer Patton on 15th May 2024

I have been using an LG UP875 4K HDR player for the last 3 years. I recently upgraded my TV to an LG OLED with Dolby Vision and now require a Dolby Vision Player. After reviews it was said the Sony UBPX-700 was the best value for the buck. I later found a fly in that ointment where Dolby Vision (DV) is manually operated. Read my review on the Sony UBP-X700. This was a deal breaker and I returned the Sony for the LG. The LG UBK90 is very similar to the UP875. Setup was a breeze and there are no settings for DV. It's all automatic! The LG UBK90 automatically detects the disc's format. I verified this with all disc formats; Standard Disc, Blu-Ray Disc, UHD 4K HDR Disc, and UHD 4K Dolby Vision Disc. It just automatically sets the playback format based on the disc's encoding. This unit has worked well so far with no issues. The DV picture is better than HDR10 on the LG OLED. Although the LG costs more with less apps than the Sony for the same picture quality, it is worth it for not having the hassle of turning DV on and off in settings. What a pain! Just put the disc in a play and the LG will do the rest. I have no need for apps on a DVD player and at the time of this review BB offers the LG player with a free harmony remote. That helps offset the price if you need one.

    Very good

Posted by Katie Rodriguez on 12th May 2024

Best of all, the clear picture quality is good. The TV is also LG, so it is very easy to connect. It's a very good buy. We will connect it to the projector later.

Great Player - Especially for Dolby Vision

Posted by Christian Little on 9th May 2024

When I acquired my first Dolby-Vision capable 4K TV, there weren't a lot of options in terms of Dolby Vision Blu-Ray players. Those few that were available were either very expensive, had known "issues", and/or they weren't actually going to support DV until a future firmware update would be released. I wound up purchasing the Sony UPB-X800, which is an excellent 4K Blu-ray player, but doesn't support DV. (I knew that at the time, so it wasn't a surprise.) The X800 has served me well (and will continue to do so in another room), but when the UBK-90 became available, I decided to take a chance on it .. and I'm glad I did. Admittedly, I've had it for only a short while, but so far, it has flawlessly played every disc I've tried in it. (I have a combination of regular Blu-ray discs, 4K discs, and 3D discs as well.) It's quiet, quick-loading, has a solid build feel to it, and yes, it supports Dolby Vision right out of the box. My AV receiver supports DV pass-through, so I'm using only one of the UBK 90's two HDMI outs. However, the other HDMI out can be used in case you need to send the video directly to your TV, and the audio directly to the receiver. My first test of course was with a movie that's encoded for Dolby Vision. I chose "Despicable Me 3". The moment I started playing it, the words "Dolby Vision" appeared on my TV, indicating the mode I was now in. The picture quality was fantastic, and I had no problems with playback or navigation. The unit itself is very (almost totally) quiet, and disc loading is relatively quick. I've given this player 5-stars because it's everything I want in a player, but there are a couple of things that some folks may not like. First, there is no front-panel display ... only a few buttons, a USB port, and a power indicator light (plus the disc tray, of course). I personally don't care one way or another about the lack of a display, so I'm fine with that. My TV is my display. The only other thing that some may not like is the lack of apps. Currently, only Netflix and YouTube are supported ... nothing else. That's not to say more won't ever be coming, but that's all there is at the moment. Here again, I don't mind because my TV already supports all of the streaming services I care about, and there are plenty of third-party media streamers on the market, so it's not a big deal for me. With the UBK-90, It seems that LG has addressed the issues that were (reportedly) plaguing one of their earlier models. Overall, I think they've made a fine 4K Blu-ray player

    Beautiful Picture; Limited Features

Posted by Michelle Rangel on 8th May 2024

The LG UBK90 is a worthy successor to LG's previous player, the UP970. It is Dolby Vision-compatible out of the box and should be an excellent 4K Blu-ray player for most users. However, it's missing a few features that some A/V enthusiasts would enjoy. PROS: - Easy set up. Simply connect an HDMI cable (make sure it's a Certified Premium cable), plug it into a power outlet, and then follow the on-screen instructions. - Very fast and responsive. Discs are fast to load and the unit responds to commands from the remote quickly. - Dual HDMI outputs. HDMI 2 is reserved for audio-only output. Perfect for those with older soundbars or receivers that can't pass through Dolby Vision or HDR signals. - Beautiful picture quality. I've tried several UHD Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, regular Blu-rays, and even some old DVDs. All look very nice. For UHD Blu-rays, the player automatically engages Dolby Vision or HDR10 depending on the format of the disc. Unlike some other 4K Blu-ray players, this player supports Dolby Vision out of the box -- you don't have to wait for any firmware updates. - Quiet operation. A common complaint of the previous UP970 model was that the disc drive sounded like a jet engine. The UBK90 has been extremely quiet during all discs that I've played. - Solid build quality. It's not as sturdy or hefty as some competing models, but it feels noticeably heavier and more solidly built than the UP970. - The remote control is lightweight and comfortable to hold. CONS: - There is no "subtitle" button on the remote. If you want to turn on subtitles during movie playback, you'll need to press the "info" button and then turn on subtitles via an on-screen menu. - The user interface design of this player is archaic - like something out of the early 2000s. It works, but I personally think it's time for LG to add a bit more polish. - The settings menu is extremely limited. There are no advanced audio/video settings. No Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones. No obvious way to stream media from a home network. - There is no advanced playback information while watching a disc. Some other Blu-ray players are capable of displaying detailed video/audio codec information as well as bitrate during disc playback. Likely not a big deal for average users, but advanced users might miss having this information available. - Only two streaming services - Netflix and YouTube - are available. It doesn't appear that anymore will be added. OTHER THOUGHTS: - There is a known issue with Dolby Vision over HDMI on LG OLED TVs. During certain movies, black levels (particularly the black bars above and below the picture) will appear as a murky grey rather than perfect black. Usually, the black levels will flicker back-and-forth between perfect black and grey during the entire movie. I tried to watch The Matrix 4K disc (with Dolby Vision) on the UBK90 connected to my LG OLED C6 TV. The elevated black levels were so distracting that I had to stop watching. Unfortunately, there is no way to force the UBK90 into HDR10 mode for discs that have Dolby Vision, which would solve the black level issue (at the expense of Dolby Vision). So in order to watch The Matrix, I had to reconnect an older 4K Blu-ray player that does not support Dolby Vision. Some discs do not have this issue: Black Panther and Saving Private Ryan appeared to play in Dolby Vision with perfect black levels. Regardless, LG has acknowledged that this is a problem with its OLED TVs, but still has not fixed it. It needs to be fixed ASAP. OVERALL: If you're looking for a no-frills 4K Blu-ray player to go with your new Dolby Vision-enabled TV, this is a great option. However, competing models in the same price range offer more advanced features and more streaming services that some users will enjoy. Perhaps most importantly, LG needs to address the elevated Dolby Vision black level issue via firmware updates ASAP. Otherwise, the benefits of many Dolby Vision Blu-ray discs will be lost on owners of LG OLED TVs.
