    CAPABLE MACHINE!!!

Posted by Taylor Goodwin on 18th May 2024

The Dell G15 stands as a formidable contender in the gaming laptop arena. The laptop offers excellent performance with great specs but takes a hit in some areas. So, let’s go over what this laptop has to offer and what could be improved upon. Configuration: DIMENSIONS: 1.06 H x 14.07 W x 10.80D – 6.19LBS DISPLAY: 15.6 in FHD LED Display VRAM: 8GB GDDR6 CPU: Intel i7 13th Gen13650HX Processor STORAGE: 1TB (EXPANDABLE) PCIe NVMe SSD RAM: DDR5 16GB (EXPANDABLE) WLAN: WIFI-6 PORTS: 1 X HDMI 2.1, 1 Headphone/Microphone jack combo, 3 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, and 1 USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port with DisplayPort BATTERY: 6 CELL 86WH – Up to 6.5 hours Processor and Memory: The G15 is powered by the 13th Gen intel Core i7-13650HX processor which has 14 cores, 20 threads and can turbo boost up to 4.90 Ghz. The 13th gen i7 processor is a multitasking powerhouse. I experienced seamless transitions between gaming, streaming, and productivity seamlessly. The 16GB of DD5 ram ensures that your laptop can handle even the most demanding application with ease. Combine the processor and memory in this unit with the GeForce RTX 4060 and you have yourself a top-notch gaming machine. I tested out multiple AAA title games and it was a smooth and beautiful gaming experience across the board. Display: The G15 boasts a 15.6 screen with Full HD 1920x1080 120Hz LED display. The display itself is bright, clear and the colors are pretty good, I personally feel that the FHD resolution feels a bit dated for a gaming laptop of this caliber. Unfortunately, there are no options for a higher resolution display for this model. Design: Even though I am always a big fan of being able to upgrade my laptops, I guess they come at a price, and this is where this laptop takes a hit. The G15 comes in a Dark shadow color which gives it a sleek look, but this thing is massive and heavy. Coming in at almost 6.5lbs and with a massive power brick, this isn’t a laptop that you can game on or watch movies on your lap for extended periods and gets a bit cumbersome to carry from place to place. The laptop also struggles with heat management, often becoming uncomfortably warm during extended gaming sessions. STORAGE: This laptop offers a storage capacity of up to 1TB. While this is generally sufficient for most users, the storage space is expandable if you choose. In conclusion, Dell G15, while offering some impressive specs and delivering a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience, falls short in terms of design, portability and heat management. A laptop should not feel like a chore to carry about and the heat coming off this thing was bit much for me. However, if you prioritize raw performance at a competitive price point and don't mind the bulkier design and don’t plan on gaming with this on your lap, it's still a capable machine.

    First gaming laptop

Posted by Isaiah Robinson on 13th May 2024

The laptop runs very smoothly. However, after owning it for a week or so, I found that it has trouble restarting without freezing on the dell logo. I can get by this by rebooting the laptop, but this is kinda annoying, I'll definitely try to look into troubleshooting this issue.

It has the right internal hardware

Posted by Valerie Davis on 11th May 2024

This is the definition of a budget gaming laptop. It has all the right internal hardware to push games and it runs the tests to show it is in the gaming range. It plays games fairly well at 1080p, even tested with VR despite the Meta Link software saying it is not supported. So, it isn’t all that bad. However, it is all the external parts that just makes it feel cheap. Starting with unpacking, this laptop has the biggest power brick that I have ever seen. And I mean this thing is a literal brick, coming in at 3.4 pounds, that is over half the weight of the 6.2lb laptop itself. I’ve had more powerful laptops and they never had a power supply this big. The next thing that made it feel cheap is the keyboard and touchpad. They just feel very loose and don’t have a very good feel to them.Sometimes it takes some real effort to push the touchpad in to click and it feels like it shifts. At Least it has a full number pad for the size, but it is shrunk to fit. The backlight is a single amber color, but is pretty consistent across all the keys. The one thing I find as a real let down is the display. After playing for a little while and then having switched screen, I noticed a very bad persistence of the previous image. So, I did a little test myself and made a high contrast image. Left it on the screen for 15 minutes and then went to a solid color and you can see from the images below that the previous image can still be seen. Like I mentioned, the 13 gen i7 processor, the RTX 4060, 16GB RAM, 1 TB SSD M2 drive with the ability to add another, the USB 3.2 ports, they all make up to be pretty impressive for the price, so I get that they have to cut corners in other areas. Like the fact it does not support 6 Ghz Wi-Fi yet, but at least is 802.11ax. It just doesn’t seem as impressive on the outside. Personally, if you already have your own external keyboard, mouse and monitor and don’t plan to use the laptop much for travel, then this isn’t all that bad. You probably wouldn’t be able to build a computer for that much with these specs and still keep it down to the size of a laptop. Overall, it fits the budget gaming laptop category perfectly. You get the numbers, just not the quality. I don’t want to say it is a bad laptop, I would just say I only recommend it if you are looking for something that can keep up with modern games at a decent spec and have some of your own hardware to plug into it, then it’s not bad. If you want it for traveling a lot or don’t have your own monitor, keyboard and mouse, then you might want to look for another model.

    Full wattage 4060!

Posted by Nicholas Thomas on 7th May 2024

This gaming laptop is basically the Dell branded version of their higher tier award winning gaming brand laptops in disguise at a price point that knocks it out of the park. Specifically a wolf in sheep’s clothing so to speak. It even uses Dells own Alienware command center for all the controls you could want as far as performance, lighting, sound, fan speed and all. It even has a built in overlay for games you can hit a control shift Y and bring up your current fan speed and cpu/gpu temps which is really nice to know of sometimes when your really cranking. One thing that really impressed me with this is the fact that it runs a FULL 140w rtx 4060 in here which the past two years is almost never this high of wattage. Granted wattage doesn’t make as significant a difference as it did on the 30 series gpus it still gives this machine an advantage vs some others that are only running the same graphics chip at 80w for sure. Being able to reach benchmark scores into the high 10k low 11k range in time spy bringing it into reach of other much more expensive 4070 powered machines. This HX cpu is also extremely performant for the spec and power draw able to score over 20k multi core on the R23 benchmark and 1900 single core. With these big chips you’d expect two things, heat and power consumption with loud fans. So because you can use Alienware command center you can set your preferred profile which on silent mode means the fans actually don’t even spin and it’s actually silent while on performance or even G turbo mode the fans are loud but oh my the thermals are incredibly good!! Even maxing out the cpu and gpu at the same time 100% it can manage to keep both in the 70c range which is extremely rare in gaming laptops these days. Now it does use a very large power brick which is 330w but the fact it’s running full wattage makes total sense to have and can be thought as a large benefit. I should note on battery power in silent profile web browsing I was comfortably able to do so for a good 6 hours without fear of battery being dead with the large 86w/hr battery this is also a really good stat for a gaming laptop. The chassis is an excellent dark grey and black with orange backlit keys and orange rear vents which really pops and looks very good. It is a full plastic build including the trackpad but it’s not the type of plastic to where it feels cheap it’s all quality feeling and not creaky or anything and the trackpad feels almost Teflon coated it’s so smooth. The display is FHD and a little on the dimmer side at only 250nits and this is the only real drawback for me and why it’s not a 5 star review. The resolution is a great fit for this gpu but the brightness doesn’t get bright enough in certain situations for me when working in front of my living room window. Note that I can still see it but in direct sunlight it’s just on the verge of being difficult to do so and just 50-100 nits brighter screen would be a perfect solution here but alas you can’t have it all at this price point. That brings me to the price and thoughts here overall. I don’t think that there is another budget minded gaming laptop that is this good of a value out there today. There is heavy competition at this price point by almost every brand out there but Dell really just gives you a little of everything then makes this thing shine with extreme performance with good thermals you can’t find in any of the others. You can’t really ask for more, making this lead the pack in the budget machines category imo. Great laptop for a budget gamer to a college student to even the hardcore gamer looking for a good machine for the value as it can suit a wide variety of uses perfectly well even if it’s not primarily gaming. This edges out every other laptop in its price range and gets a good recommendation from me.

    Affordable high-performance Alienware-like laptop

Posted by Joseph White on 7th May 2024

This Alienware-like laptop falls into the budget high-performance gaming category, making it a great alternative if you can’t afford an Alienware. The design is strikingly similar to Alienware, which I’ve used for years. Unboxing is straightforward, with minimal packaging materials, yet everything is well-protected. Design: The design is eye-catching and elegant, featuring sharp edges and colored vents at the back, reminiscent of the Alienware 15 R3 with its stylish dark shadow gray color. While it’s a bit heavy for portability, especially with the massive 330-watt power brick required for charging, the laptop strikes a functional balance between 13" and 17" models. The 15.6" screen offers ample real estate for gaming, work, productivity, and entertainment. The keyboard is well-spaced and backlit, providing a smooth typing experience. The front-facing camera is decent for video conferences but lacks Windows Hello sign-in, so you’ll need to use a username, password, or PIN. Hardware: The Dell G15 features a 15.6" Full HD 1920x1080 120Hz LED display, Intel i7 13650 HX processor, Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU, 16 GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort, HDMI 2.1, and an ethernet port. Setup and Performance: Setting up this powerhouse laptop was a breeze, taking just 14 minutes, including updates. The screen, although only FHD, looks fantastic with a 120Hz refresh rate, providing responsive performance with no screen tearing. The laptop offers smooth visuals and vibrant colors, and the hardware handles peak performance effortlessly, even though at 60Hz for most of my games. The audio is clear and loud, and thanks to the Alienware-inspired cooling system, the device didn’t overheat during long gaming sessions. Connected to an external monitor, it performed flawlessly, making me very satisfied. With the Alienware Command Center software, you can customize performance settings, ranging from battery to high-performance modes. Additionally, the G key on the keyboard can be used to activate performance mode instantly, though this causes the fans to get quite loud. Summary: Subjectively, I loved this laptop. It is solid, stylish, and offers outstanding performance that extends beyond gaming to productivity and entertainment. My only downsides are the bulky power brick and the lack of Windows Hello sign-in capability. Other than that, it’s a great laptop.

    a worthy gaming laptop

Posted by Kenneth Johnson on 4th May 2024

Dell G15 is this an alienware laptop? coz it pretty much is! the design of the laptop is something you’ll find on an alienware. I love the shadow gray color. the orange accent is subtle, and exhaust fans at back that reminds me of race car. it definitely gives that gamer vibe when you see this laptop in person. minor flex on screen which shows the build quality is good. also make sure your hand is not greasy it can leave finger prints on the top cover of the laptop that can be noticeable when it’s on properly lighting. second thing I notice is how much I love love the keyboard feels with this G15. great RGB lighting and keys are comfortable to use not clicky. WSAD keys are also highlighted, I love how this keyboard definitely pointed for gamers. G15 is equip with an RTX 4060. with Core i7. the screen is 1080p and the main thing I don’t like about it is the color quality of the screen. it’s quite lacking on color department that the screen looks a bit faded on games. one thing I highly recommend is to download the latest Nvidia app and apply the nvidia vibrance boost. is can be activated on games and man it’s a huge upgrade when using that features for the laptop. another thing that surprise me is how huge the charging brick with G15 is comically huge all that size for 330W. it’s almost half of the screen if you put them side by side. not really sure why but i’ve seen a much powerful laptop and has smaller power adapter. for me what makes this an alienware is the fact that when you boot a game an alienware command center is installed automatically. this gives you few settings to adjust like your RGB and how you want your PC performance to behave. touch pad was fine I didn’t notice any delay when using but you might have to physically put more pressure on your press. also don’t forget that you can add more PCIE memory in the future. now how does this laptop run on games. halo Infinite optimize settings including low to ultra texture and some medium get 160fps and it looks and runs great. happy to see if goes above the 120fps but this monitor is limited to 120hz overall I was happy with how my most played game performed. playing The Finals on my optimize settings gets me 110fps to 104 still performs above 60fps is all I need this one seems a bit more demanding maybe because I was using RTX feature but overall it never went below 100fps on my settings I used. overwatch optimize setting was locked 120fps which is the max hz the monitor can offer fan noise on all games is loud but not loud enough to be annoying honestly after playing I stop hearing the fan noises. it performs extremely well I didn’t see any spike on speed noises. a reasonable fan performance. I hope in future release the 1080p led screen gets a much better picture quality next year. temperature while gaming is fair low I believe the design of the laptop has a great airflow as well to help out and it shows. I think for the price is reasonable. the laptop is beautiful performance is also great having i7 and RTX 4060. overall highly recommend this laptop to any gamer.

    The good laptop

Posted by Robert Williams on 18th Apr 2024

10/10! Can run fortnite, dbd, elden ring all 100+ fps, VERY SMOOTH running laptop and easy to game with. In addition, I would highly reccomand changing 32 GB of RAM (memory) as it makes it 100% easier to run multiple games at once. Would reccomand this for anyone interested in a high performance gaming laptop

Keep Calm and Replace Your Desktop

Posted by Ronald Smith on 17th Apr 2024

Laptops present OEMs with a difficult conundrum: power, portability, and price…pick two. In most circumstances, a low priced and portable laptop won’t have much power, while a powerful and portable laptop will give you sticker shock. Sacrificing some of the portability is where most affordable gaming laptops land, and nowhere is that more obvious than in Dell’s G-series offerings. Fortunately, Dell seems to have recognized that an opportunity exists to utilize the lack of portability to help further the power offering with better cooling options, and nowhere is that more evident than in the new G5. Touting Dell’s “thermal shelf” cooling solution, this thicker-than-average 15.6” gaming laptop packs an absolute wallop, with a CPU and GPU performing like desktop-grade components capable of generating over 250 watts of heat when both are at maximum attack. This is usually a recipe for thermal throttling and uncomfortable gaming, but Dell’s choice to put a more sophisticated cooling solution in the chassis pays dividends, even if it pushes their midrange gaming laptop more towards a desktop replacement than a portable workstation. Though some sacrifices were made on the way, the Dell G5 punches above its weight. - Unboxing and Setup First impressions of the Dell G5 are the size and heft of the laptop. With Dell’s unique “thermal shelf” solution jutting out the rear of the laptop, the G5 takes ono a more squared shape compared to most gaming laptops, and inch-thick chassis matches its weight - this is no light laptop. The included 330W power brick is similarly massive, with long cords giving the impression that this machine sacrifices some portability for power. The all-plastic chassis is has quite a few hard angles that aren’t the most comfortable things to hold, but the design is far from overstyled. Elevated feet allow the thermal shelf solution to intake cool air from below the laptop and exhaust to the rear, ensuring heat is efficiently vented clear of the screen. The design limits the screen hinge to about a 135-degree angle. Port selection is adequate - 3 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports, HDMI 2.0, USB-C with DisplayPort output, combination headphone/mic jack, and as is befitting for a desktop-grade gaming laptop, an integrated Gigabit ethernet port. Initial setup of Windows 11 goes as expected, but some Dell-preinstalled bloatware is included that tries to get you to register as part of setup. Fortunately these are skippable and the applications are easily uninstalled from Windows settings. Dell Support is preinstalled for easier access to chat support, if you prefer. - Performance In short, this laptop is a monster for both productivity and gaming. The Intel Core i7-13650HX is a high-power laptop CPU packing 14 cores (6 “performance” cores with hyperthreading, plus 8 “efficient” cores) that performs almost identically to a [12th-generation] desktop Core i7. I couldn’t find a situation that seemed to make the chip stumble, even when rendering a video clip in the background of the demanding game I was running simultaneously. This is truly unfettered desktop performance in a somewhat mobile package. The mobile variant of the RTX 4060 8GB in use here is configured to run at a ridiculously high power target - I believe the TDP max of 115 watts. What this means is the chip boosts to incredibly high clock speeds, which gives it performance closer to RTX 4070 mobile graphics cards in real-world testing. At the laptop’s native 1080p resolution, every game I could throw at it ran at max settings, well beyond 60fps with some pushing to the screen’s 120Hz refresh rate. Higher resolutions are possible with external displays, where the 4060 somewhat struggles to run games at native 4K at acceptable speeds, but if this is your intended use case, the RTX chips allow for use of DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and similar visual enhancements to lower GPU workload and boost framerate. The only downside to this system’s configuration is the 16GB of system RAM, but this laptop mercifully uses SODIMM memory, which is upgradeable. Two 8GB sticks come preinstalled by default and are easily changed to higher speeds and capacities. The 1TB SSD is your typical NVMe PCIe 4.0 fare and works well enough to host the OS and several game installs. - Thermals & Noise The cooling capacity of Dell’s “thermal shelf” solution is astounding. With the fans cranked to max and the system set to Turbo mode, I had a hard time getting either the RTX 4060 to crack 70 degrees Celsius, or the i7-13650HX to crest 90. These are both short of their thermal throttling points, and in any circumstance the heat generated by these is vented rearward, leaving the laptop surface cool and comfortable to continue gaming on. The keyboard never got noticeably warm, and the laptop felt cool to the touch except at the rear. The counterpoint to the beefy cooling capability is that at full bore, the fans on this machine are somewhat loud. The noise isn’t unbearable, as the fans are larger than average resulting in a lower pitch when they’re running, but you will definitely want to game with headphones on or use an external speaker system to overcome the noise generated by this machine. Fortunately the fan speeds are tunable, and the sheer size of the heatsinks and fans means you can run these at much lower speeds while maintaining most of the performance on tap. Indeed, even the Balanced profile in the Alienware app allowed excellent gaming performance while the fans ran at low, modest speeds. - Screen, Sound Hitting the MSRP for this laptop did require a few small sacrifices, and it’s obvious in the screen and speakers. While the 1080p 15.6” display supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate, the VA-type panel is just average in terms of refresh rate, color and contrast, and viewing angles. Colors are only somewhat vibrant, and as brightness increases so too do the blacks appear to be a dim gray. In addition, the panel is mounted with a bit too much pressure along the top of the screen, resulting in a little bit of color bleed that’s apparent in dark scenes. Apart from the high refresh rate, this feels like your typical 15.6” laptop display. Fortunately the screen supports adaptive sync for smoother gameplay. The speakers on this laptop are some of the weakest I’ve heard in some time. While the upward-firing speakers generate clear enough speech and in-game sound effects at medium volume, they lack absolutely any bass reproduction whatsoever, and are prone to resonate and distort into the plastic chassis when cranking the volume higher. Dolby Atmos adds nothing to the experience here as the speakers were clearly included as a minimum requirement, nothing more. - Build Quality, Battery Life, Upgradeability Build quality on the G5 is reasonably solid. Despite the all-plastic body, the chassis and screen exhibit little flex, with a display hinge that feels sturdy enough for midrange laptops like this one. The finish of the plastic isn’t high-end by any stretch, but the texturing feels nice, even if prone to smudges from fingertips. The keyboard and touchpad feel firm with only a slight bit of flex at the center of the keyboard, if you’re looking for it. Despite a large 86 watt-hour battery, the fact of the matter is the desktop-grade components used here yield a Dell-estimated 6 and half hour battery life. This is also only possible using NVIDIA Optimus technology, which selectively disables the RTX 4060 when on battery power (or by user choice) to use only the Core i7’s onboard Intel UHD 710 (no Iris here) graphics. In my testing, I got just about 4 and a half hours on battery with the 4060 disabled before Windows went into Battery Saver mode (20% remaining), and I eeked out just about 6 hours on my longest run with most instances wrapping up closer to 5 and a half…honestly, not too bad for this size class. The best part about this larger-than-expected laptop is just how easy it is to upgrade. The bottom panel has 10 screws (4 of which are captive) and it pops off with ease, revealing two SODIMM memory slots for up to 64GB of DDR5, and two (!!) NVMe SSD connectors, only one of which is populated from the factory. The WiFi card is on a separate mini-PCIe connector, and the battery is easily disconnected and removed should it need replacement. Going a step further, the blower fans are large and modular for easy replacement. Dell has long struggled with e-waste but this laptop is exemplary for maintaining your machine to give it a long service life. Commendable! - Bottom Line Dell’s G5 gaming laptop represents a great value in gaming laptops that lean more toward the desktop replacement class. Though some sacrifices were made to hit the $1,149 MSRP, the mediocre screen and substandard speakers are hardly concessions worth dinging the machine for, given the powerhouses of a CPU and GPU on hand here, with a thermal design more than capable of dissipating the heat these processors generate, and a very serviceable mainboard. This is a machine that will easily keep up five years from now with just memory and storage upgrades, and should last quite a long time with basic care and maintenance. If you’re looking for a machine that can do it all at a reasonable price, the Dell G5 comes highly recommended!
