    Great Printer... Could be Smarter!

Posted by Katie Jensen on 9th Jun 2024

THIS… is the Canon Mega Tank GX3020 which is Canons new small at home printer setup for all your printing, scanning and copying needs. It is a nice sized printer in canons iconic off white build, matched with an app, a 1.3” screen and several buttons to get the job done. This printer is claimed to be able to print 6,000 black and white pages and 14,000 colored pages on a full tank… and while I didn’t test this as I don’t have 14,000 things to print let alone 6,000 - it seems to be accurate, as the print levels hardly went down after my testing which included several full page prints of my dog (Lila you made it to the big screen!). Another notable feature is that this printer doesn’t take “cartridge” ink and rather takes bottle ink that easily pours into the tank correlated with a specific sized and keyed head on the bottle to match the color to the right bottle color so you can’t accidentally put yellow in the black and vice versa. With all that being said…. Lets cut into it! Setup - This is absolutely the biggest thorn in my side with almost every printer, and the Canon GX3020 wasn’t the exception to this unfortunately. It took me about an hour and a half to set this printer up and get it connected. The app makes it seem as if all you have to do it turn on the printer…. But that never resulted in the printer showing up in the app to pair. I also had to go into the settings of the printer to setup the WIFI and get it connected (twice!). I wish it was so much simpler, such as joining the printers local WIFI and having it mesh to my home WIFI - which the printer ultimately did after several hoops and hurdles. Build Quality - The GX3020 feels very premium, made of a nice cream and black plastic with soft close hinges. Everything was very well made and thought out, the buttons have a nice click and everything opens and closes ever so perfectly. If we remove how small and bad the screen is (which is relatively minor after setup) it is a near perfect build. Everything laid out on this printer just makes sense, and is very obviously well thought out. I really wouldn’t change a thing and really enjoy how this printer looks on my shelf. Print Quality - The Canon GX3020 really shocked me with not only how quick and quiet it printed, but also how well it did. From custom print sizes to it auto sizing the photos I sent from my phone to the paper - the whole process was quick and seamless. I also really enjoyed the double sided print feature, which took me a second to figure out, but once I did was super nice! Scanning and copying was also a breeze and it scans quite nice, with the ability to email what you scanned to whoever needs to see it quite easily as well. I have to say everything past the setup has been so easy and effortless that it really starts to makeup for it. Mobile App - While simple, the mobile app does everything you could need it to do. Print, copy, print photos from multiple sources (including your phone), check ink levels, order ink and scan documents/images with its scanning feature using your smartphones camera. While the printer setup could use some work, the app itself is quite nice and simple! I really enjoy that canon made it simple, quick and intuitive - if you need to do something, the app just ~does it~ ! Gripes - While I feel as if I don’t have many overall gripes, and the gripes I do have can be easily fixed (mostly), it does really negatively alter my thoughts on the printer. First, the screen on the printer is actually god awful - there should be no world where a $400 canon printer has a significantly worse screen than a $150 Epson printer. On top of that, it is slow? There was lag in my inputs and I could see the screen refresh to new screens. Second, the setup process was actually pulling teeth worthy if you aren’t directly connecting it, and the process feels like it was made when printers were invented. I have never had such an issue pairing a printer to its own app, and I really think this is something Canon needs to focus on in an update because I would have really thought about returning it during the setup process. The last, and arguably most important thing is the lack of education included with the printer. It has three paper feeding areas and I cannot tell you which does what and which one NEEDS paper. Do I put paper in all three, just the bottom tray or just one? The app hardly connects the printer, and does an even worse job at educating you on the features you just spent $400 on. Things I loved - Once we get past the setup process, the printer did almost automatically connect every time without error. I can safely say at least it was a one time hair pull, but if I had to do it again I would throw the printer in the trash. The print quality on this printer is actually the best I have seen… and it isn’t even the top model. It was also very easy to send print task to the printer from my phone on the fly, have the printer auto adjust the image to the page, and have it print quickly and quietly. In fact it was so quiet I started to get mad at first thinking it didn’t get the command but lone behold it came out quickly and quietly! This printer also has a massive internal storage for paper so it doesn’t have to be outside the printer exposed to life (and kids…. Stop taking my printer paper!!). I also love how I can check how much printer ink I have left just glancing at it, and the options for refilling it are quite abundant and cost effective! Conclusion - While the setup process was horrendous and the education could use some work, this has been a great, reliable printer with everything a household could need for years (yes YEARS!) with the 3 year warranty included with the printer. While it is $400 up front, I think that it will prove to be a cheaper option over time due to its low cost ink refiling and ease of use. I think that should canon fix the setup and include some prompts on what each paper loading section is for, this would easily be a 5 star auto buy printer. I can confidently put this at 4 stars with room to grow as my biggest issues are all software. I am glad I have this printer now and it has easily taken over the spot for printing in my household. As always, BestBuy has excellent customer service and a great return policy, so you never have to worry about buying a product that you don’t like.

Great for high demand of printing home or work.

Posted by Christian Taylor on 6th Jun 2024

Review of Canon Maxify GX3020 The printer has feature for Print, Copy and Scanning. At glance it is not very different from other models that exist previously, The main differentiator consist on the large number of printing capabilities reducing the frequency of the need to replace ink cartridge as: a) Support for Paper Sheet: 1. It has 250 Sheet Cassette 2. 100 Sheet Rear Tray b) Ink thank 1.Up to 6,000 pages BW 2. Up to 14,000 pages Color Then the adhoc benefits are: 1. Doble sided scanning 2. Scanning Resolution 1200 x 2400 dpi Optical 3. Print Resolution up to 600 x 1200 dpi 4. Use only four bottles of ink: Cyan, Magenta, Black, and Yellow. Setting up and start using is not different to others model, still practical once connected to wifi, able to scan and print immediately. Printing definitions is good enough or bit more than needed for just an office work. However I find a bit odd the physical place to connect with high-speed usb as it is kind of hidden in the rear right side that is not noticed at first sight. What it feels come short: 1. WiFI connection protocol support: doesn’t support the 6 GHz for WifFI 6 and WiFI 6E. 2. LCD display: although understandably its main purpose is saving or maximizing the ink cartridge, and use of lcd screen might not be high frequency usage, but still it is hard to work with it as it is monochrome and small size of display (1.35”). Have to give hard look on the screen in order to read the menu. But aside of observation, it is good value for the need specifically set in Office or Home work that demands heavy printing activities. Or alternatively, for parents and kids fun work that doesn’t require high or professional level of printing and scanning resolution.

    What beats a laser?

Posted by Juan Brown on 5th Jun 2024

Laser printers are fast, quiet and print quality photos. I have tested very various ridiculous photos on regular paper and they've all seemingly come out fantastic. That's just the beginning. Connecting directly to a computer with printing cable will allow you to scan at will and send directly to your computer or laptop. Scanning is simple printing is simple, set up is even simple. I first set it up with my phone and then turned around and set it up with my desktop computer and it was all simple, fast and easy. Furthermore, the ink tanks. For whatever reason, I had an entirely different idea of what this consisted of, but it's actually pretty cool. Number one. It is color and numerically coated so no way of actually getting it wrong. But do be careful. The little connecting latches can have you put a vat of ink in the wrong tank. But there are latches on the printer and on the bottles themselves that allow for a perfect connection and a perfect poor no spilling and no chance of getting it all over the place. You almost have to try to screw it all the way up. I am very partial to laser printers and I'm very fun of this one in particular. Highly recommended

    Great solid printer.

Posted by Eric Watson on 30th May 2024

This printer is great... Physical setup was super easy. Took all about 10 mins with ink and all. Android app was easy to use. PC setup was easy too. Hardest thing to setup was the online material. That took a little bit of time to figure out but it was done. Print quality is great. It has multiple feeds which is good. I can keep letter size in the tray below and 4x6 up in the top. The print quality was great. 4x6 on photo paper was good. Noise level is pretty low. Lots of custom options and settings to play with. Biggest plus are the quantity of ink and the warranty. The other plus is the software for editing and printing. Also this printer does not require any subscriptions or payment plans. Con for me was the shear size of the printer. It is a bit larger than other competitors. You need to make sure you account for this or else it will be an issue for your workspace. But other than that this is a solid buy. I would recommend this based on all of the pluses that I had. Good job Canon.

Great printer but set up print drained the color

Posted by Monica Martinez on 29th May 2024

So…I wanted to really like this printer, especially coming from the Canon name. But I was left frustrated and scratching my head (how’s that as a teaser?). Setting up was pretty simple. There are so many areas of tape that needed to be removed. Connecting it to my home wifi was pretty effortless. The screen is a little small but the arrow buttons are very responsive. I enjoyed seeing that this paper tray is very deep and can hold 250 sheets. There is also a rear sheet tray that can hold 100 sheets and a rear flat tray. As an All-in-one, I needed a printer that can do it all since my kids are homeschooled and I have a small home office. This can print 18 black and white and 13 color pages a minute which is good. The ink bottles that are included are very easy and doesn’t leave any mess. I noticed that the Black ink still had some left after filling up the cartridge, whereas the color used up the entire bottle. Stated, it has 6000 pages of Black and White and up to 14000 in color which is very impressive. So why the lower star? After just printing the adjustment sheet for set up, the colored ink levels dipped very noticeably. I was shocked that it drained that much and this was just a two page set up sheet. I dont know how this can do 14,000 colored pages. So this was very disappointing. Overall, this is a very nice printer. I was just a little disappointed with the amount of colored ink used for set up. Quality is great when using a higher weighted paper, so I used 24 lbs sheets which makes the print pop up. Also the Canon App is a must as you can control the scanning from there and it automatically uploads to the app which is great!

    Great print quality and speed

Posted by Emily Lopez on 26th May 2024

This tank inkjet printer exceeds my expectations for quality, quantity, and speed printing. Installing the software/app, doing the setup, and filling the tank reservoir with the four ink colors were easy, and it took less than 30 minutes. The ink refill bottles are color-coded and designed only to fit the correct ink color, with no chance of mixing colors. The small and straightforward control panel is not a touch-screen control. Printing in black/white and color is high quality with sharp and detailed pints. If you use photo paper, your images come out looking very nice. I have used matte and gloss paper; all pictures come without smears. There are no smudge prints, even photo prints. The back feeding tray accepts standard-size paper and most envelopes. I have used it for some time and have had no connection or print issues. After many prints, the ink level on the tanks is still very high. Being an All-In-One printer, it is surprising that it is small and very lightweight, which is excellent if you need to move it around. I am glad I got this high-quality ink tank reservoir and fast printer.

Large MegaTank ink and excellent print quality

Posted by Steven Davidson on 22nd May 2024

So far I have been using the Canon Maxify GX3020 for about a week and I'm really pleased with the ease of use. This is an All In One printer that works great for a family home printer, and as a small office printer. It is capable of print, copy, and scan functions. The Canon Maxify GX3020 also allows for 2 sided printing to help boost your printing potential. The printer is about the size of a medium/heavy duty printer and comes in at 8.6"H x 16.4"W, and a weight of about 18.2 pounds. The printer is an off white color with a charcoal colored facade on the face. Overall the printer looks pleasing to the eye and makes my desk area look nice. There is an accompanying app from Canon that will help get your new printer up and running in no time. The printer has a very minimal setup to it and it's plug and play out of the box. There is a power cord included and that's the only external cord needed. The printer will work over your home wifi network (2.4 and 5 Ghz frequency) and is great for Apple AirPrint and other forms of wifi printing from computers and devices. The printer comes with all the ink that you need right in the box. During the setup process, the app will guide you through the steps to fill up each of the various black, blue, red, and yellow ink reservoirs. The stated productivity is 6000 black or 14,000 color pages of output. Another unique feature with this printer is that it offers Smart Assistant compatibility with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. In the past week I have printed up personal documents, work documents, children's drawing, and random printouts. The printouts have all been very crisp and precise in their quality, and the documents all look bold and professional. The printer responds fairly quickly to about 8 second of response time on my wifi printouts. There is a printout speed of approximately 18 pages per minute in black and 13 pages per minute in color pages, but of course this will vary depending upon what you are printing. The print resolution is very nice quality at 600 x 1200 dpi, so you get a nice precise printout of text or photo. There are various places to input paper such as the rear tray, cassette area, along with a rear flat tray. I have yet to print out photos and images on Canon Photo Paper, but am excited to see how pictures from my iPhone will look on this printer with Photo Paper. Another feature I'm excited about that will be useful in the long term is the ability to perform easy maintenance on this printer. The print head and maintenance cartridge are both replaceable and easily accessible when the time arises. PRO: Easy setup Black and color print quality Wifi printing Easy to use ink tanks

Almost perfect. However, can't print certain color

Posted by Jeffrey Harper on 16th May 2024

I really wanted to love this printer. I'm a big fan of tank printers and have tried other brands that use the tank system. I'll start off by saying the printer comes nicely packaged and it's easy to unload. You simply just pull out the cardboard that houses the ink bottles and then pull up on the plastic that's surrounding the printer to pull it out of the box. Setup is very simple as well. You simply download the Canon app on your phone and it walks you through the process of setting up the printer onto your wireless network. After powering on the printer it tells you to fill up the ink tanks which are really simple. You just twist off the cap to the bottles and they are notched. The ink doesn't come out until after it is placed down onto the nozzle. It takes a few minutes to fill up each color and there's three colors plus black. All in all the setup couldn't be more simple, easy to set up on the computer, as well as any smart device such as a phone. The print speed is really fast for a tank printer which is usually a draw back with tank printers but not in this case. The Bad- The printer will not print out the correct colors for maroon and purple and even some dark green. I spent hours on this issue and print it out a different color palette and tried to troubleshoot this issue myself before contacting support. After several days with little to no luck, I decided to contact Canon customer support after about an hour and a half on the phone with support trying different things. We came to the conclusion that there wasn't anything else we could do. We were never able to get the correct color to print from the printer. The rep told me that he would overnight me another printer. This one came in today and I set it up just as I did the previous one and printed out the same color that I was having issues with and the problem still exists. So this printer is having issues printing certain maroons and purples and even some dark greens. If it wasn't for this issue, I would absolutely give this printer five stars. My guess is is that this is such a new printer that they will probably release a firmware update to fix this issue. However, until then, save your money.
