Best portable gaming and productivity laptop

Posted by Megan Andrade on 27th Jun 2024

This laptop is the ideal device for those that demand very high performance but also mobility. I design and play games, so the RTS 3080 is perfect for my use case. However, since I travel a lot, I don’t like lugging around a monster device or buying a separate device. The flow gives me the best of both worlds. I can travel VERY light, but when I’m at my desk, I have the performance I need. If I’m not gaming, then the dock isn’t even needed for a decent performance. The 4K touchscreen is great for design work and allows me to get a lot done. The main draw back is the few ports available on the device itself when the dock is not in use. A secondary drawback is the length of the dock cable which is too short. Other than those two issues, it’s a great laptop that I highly recommend.

Owning up to its reviews and awards

I haven’t been able to full get a hold of this beast but in just downloading programs and transferring files. It’s ridiculous the quickness it has

    I'd buy it again

The dock is annoying and a little loose to fit, but otherwise the power and portability of this laptop is absolutely unmatched.

    Unreliable

Posted by Carla Tanner on 18th Jun 2024

Would not turn on out of the box, even after plugging in power and letting it charge. The battery and lightbulb LED on the side turned on but the display didn't. After holding/pressing the power button many times for 10 minutes it finally turned on. Upon first usage of the eGPU, I got a blue screen. Powered off then I had the first issue again of it not turning on immediately. Not worth the hassle or price especially if it won't reliably turn on when commanded to. Wish it had the newer 3050Ti internal gpu with this 32GB RAM model as well. Too bad the RAM isn't upgradable either. Returned.

Crashes crashes crashes!! 3080 lower wattage then

Posted by Mr. Michael Ray on 12th Jun 2024

5 bsod (blue screen of death) so far Over 10 crash and restarts under idle At least 3 fail to boots Xg mobile is only running at 120watts not the 150 as advertised Customer service is incompetent and says there is no level 2 techs capable of assisting with these issues. This is all while plugged in the xg mobile. Plan to return if issues arent fixed before return period

    Laptop good. Dock unreliable

Posted by Erika Davis on 12th Jun 2024

Lots of problems with the GPU dock. Had a stuck latch, returned it to BB. New unit had busted USB ports. I did an RMA for it since it would _normally_ be something covered under warranty. The ASUS repair center was literally unable to repair and test it, so they're sending it back?! It's like they don't realize they make docks, so they have no way to warranty them. So: expect problems with the GPU dock and no help from ASUS about it. Skip this generation. It's unfortunate because the laptop is quite good on its own.

    Best Portable Gaming Laptop

Posted by George Townsend on 2nd Jun 2024

This is literally the best portable gaming laptop setup in my opinion. I love to use this in tent mode using my Bluetooth Kemove mechanical keyboard, and a wireless Razor mouse. Feel like playing on something bigger? You can hook this up to a external monitor and it will still power most games on max settings (depending how big how your monitor is as ultrawide 38"+ might be a problem on ultra settings). Plugging/removing the XG Mobile is seamless and easy. Overall, I am very happy with this laptop. This is a niche product, so this might not be for everyone.

Disappointing. Hope Asus resolves issue with XGm

Posted by Maria Burgess on 25th May 2024

For a small and light laptop and gpu dock, it comes in several boxes which gives it a premium unboxing experience which is expected at this price point. It has met my requirements except for a very serious fault. My XG mobile does not power up the Flow X13 laptop and it runs on battery. I have to connect the 100W FlowX13 power brick to get the full CPU/GPU power for my Apps. Intermittently, the XG mobile will power up the Flow X13 but not for long and then I cannot get it to work again. It is very disappointing to have to send this for repairs and not getting use of this. The upside is that ASUS has announced a next generation of laptops and gpus with the XG mobile proprietary high speed interface. Asus hopefully will work out the kinks but I do feel like a beta tester that paid for this non premium experience.

Great Gaming Tablet PC, Poor (or Great) Item Title

Posted by Kevin Smith on 23rd May 2024

Fastest thin and light convertible Tablet PC. Literally has 3 GPU options, built in AMD iGPU, discrete internal NVidia GTX 1650, AND an external docking station that just happens to have an NVidia RTX 3080. Rocking in at over $3K, it might come as a shock, since it's listed as having GTX 1650. Nowhere in the item title does it list that it comes with the XG Mobile RTX 3080 external GPU dock. You have to scroll way down into the specs to see that it's included. Really poor item description on Best Buy's part. Or is it? Hear me out. I bought this gaming laptop in 2021 where it's nearly impossible to buy a high end graphics card. But since Best Buy buried the words RTX 3080 deep in the specs list, I'm guessing it doesn't get a lot of attention or get easily flagged by scalping bots. So either very careless of Best Buy OR, extremely clever. This laptop was so much easier to buy, as it remains in stock for a very long time when it's back up for sale, unlike other GPU's and gaming laptops, which are gone within milliseconds. As for the laptop? It is the fastest thin and light I've ever used. Doesn't get hot at all with normal use, and is very quiet. But when it needs to, the fans do crank up a lot when you really hammer the CPU and internal GPU. But the fan noise is definitely not as annoying as some whiny, high pitched turbo fan sounds from many Lenovo laptops I've used. The XG Mobile eGPU with RTX 3080 is the real draw here. It's roughly equivalent to a desktop 3070, but for it's size, it's amazing. I love that you don't even need to use the USB-C power brick, as it has power supply built in. Both Laptop and eGPU weigh 5lbs together. Laptop is 2.8lbs, eGPU is 2.2lbs. eGPU puts out some serious heat, though, I wish they had aimed the vent backwards, rather than the same direction as the cable. The Cable is not long enough to allow you to easily place it so that it's not blowing hot air into your face or at the computer. Internally, the RAM is soldered, which isn't a huge deal as this one comes with 32GB. But the tiny NVME SSD is kind of a headscratcher. Sure it's upgradeable, but the shortest stick config for M.2 is rare. I really think they could've fit a longer stick format there. Other downside is the Pen. Oh wait. Did you know there's a pen included? Neither did I, until I opened up the packaging. Another thing not listed in the item title. Unfortunately is NTrig, old school Microsoft surface type digitizer. I tried Wacom AES 2.0 pen, and they do not work. But NTrig is better than nothing. Last gripe, the LCD. 4K on a 13" screen is ridiculous overkill. They really should've fit a 1440P screen with 90-120Hz instead. Overall, THE most powerful convertible laptop with one of the most powerful mobile GPU's. Dream machine that does nearly everything, but with a very expensive price tag.
